OK, I get it… I think.
I’ve been looking for two days for my favourite pen. It’s a space pen.
No, it didn’t come from space, that’s how it’s marketed. It could write in space. It writes upside down, and vertically - both features I’ve enjoyed. It can also write underwater, but I can’t figure out how to get paper underwater without destroying it.
I love this pen because it’s small and I can use it anywhere. It’s always with me. Except when I loose it.
Which happens on occasion.
A few weeks ago I thought it went through the wash again. But when it didn’t turn up, I went looking. I found it next to my moleskin notebook, that I’ve basically set aside since I got my iPhone.
I’ve mod-ed another moleskin to hold my iPhone and carrying two is cumbersome when you don’t wear a jacket.
But it’s October in Edmonton and I’ve been telling my kids ” daddy should have worn socks today”.
And I should have, it’s cold sitting in the park, waiting for Kaz to do what she needs to at work, updating my blog on my oh-so-cool iPhone.
But you know, I read my notes in the moleskin the other day. I have shopping lists, to-do lists, novel research, nonfiction outlines, sermon thoughts, Bible verses that have jumped into my thoughts… And I realized I have history recorded on those pages.
When I use to-do lists, or notes on the iPhone, it’s gone when it’s time to move on. Sure, if I save it on my Mac, spotlight can find it quickly. That feature made my day yesterday, when I couldn’t get tech support for my less-than-standard problems with www.ImagineDistribution.com. But there’s something more permanent about words on a page.
Which is why I love my space pen.
But after I found it, I lost it the next day.
It wasn’t under the files on my desk, or in my jacket or pants pockets. I wasn’t too concerned but prayed “God, I love that pen, can you help me find it?”
It worked out well.
The next day I found it on the passanger seat in our van.
How it got there, I don’t know. I assumed I took it out without thinking and left it there. Although I had no reason to do that. The last time I remember seeing it was the Costco parking lot, when it fell out of my coat jacket pocket to the ground. I picked it up and put it in the frontpockets of my jeans where it would be safe.
It wasn’t. I lost it. I found it on the seat next to me.
Fast forward a week. Last night I was sure I must have left it on my desk under the new filed I opened since I last cleaned my desk looking for the pen. It wasn’t.
I figured it was lost for good. The last place I remember it was when I left my coat in the car, went into the store with both moleskins and my space pen in my hands. I put them in my back pockets, thinking that wasn’t the safest place for my pen.
I searched everwhere it could be. It wasn’t anywhere I looked. I prayed again “Lord, I really don’t want to buy another one because I lost it.”
I told Kaz I’d wait for her at the park. I figured I could get some writing done. I brought another pen.
But when I got here, right beside me, where Kaz was sitting, was my space pen.
Same location.
Twice.
Both times it should not have been there.
Both times a prayer was answered.
I don’t care if you think I’m crazy. I’m considering this as the Father’s favour on me.
God loves you - but I’m His favourite.
And I have my space pen to prove it.
